Friday, October 5, 2012

Today volunteering events will run around the country in recognition of the invaluable contribution of the 2,000 plus volunteers who make help make a difference to the lives of people who are homeless and the work of the Simon Communities.

The volunteering recognition events taking place all around the country include a sky walk in Croke Park, The Stars of Cork Simon attending an event in Blackrock Castle Observatory and a number of sleep outs. As part of this year’s Simon Week ‘Take a Step for Simon’ theme, each Community event will have a ‘take a step booth’ where people can pledge to take their Step at these events.

In the last year alone, Simon Community volunteers have helped:

  • Provide almost 10,000 meals to people who are homeless
  • In providing 130 emergency beds every night of the year
  • Support fundraising events and activities
  • Support befriending and mentoring services.

Niamh Randall, National Spokesperson, Simon Community, said “People come from all over the world to assist the Simon Community. Our volunteers are a very diverse group coming from all walks of life. Each come to Simon to be part of our work and as individuals they each bring their skills, talents and life experience with them; what unites them is that they come together knowing their contribution is meaningful, valued and lasting. None of the work we do to help improve the lives of people who are homeless would be possible without their dedication and commitment, and it is essential that we take this opportunity to applaud all their hard work.

“Every year, the Simon Community works with up to 5,000 people who are homeless or at risk. In these tough economic times more and more people face the very real prospect of homelessness and are turning to us for help. Thank you to all those who have supported us and I would encourage everyone to do what they can this Simon Week and to Take their Step for Simon.”

About Simon Week:
Simon Week 2012 (1-7 October), is now in its 5th year and we hope it will be bigger and better than ever before. This year we are asking everyone to ‘Take a Step for Simon to help tackle homelessness’. Taking a Step for Simon is about getting together to make a difference, so what can you do? A step can be anything big or small - it could be taking part in a fundraiser for your local Simon Community, deciding to volunteer, donating time, a service or money, a promise to write a letter to a local newspaper - you name it and you make it your step for Simon. All you have to do is decide what your step will be and then take your step it’s that simple!  If we all take a step together, we can help tackle homelessness.

About the Simon Community:
