95% of properties available to rent are priced beyond the reach of people depending on state rent supports for their housing, a snapshot study by the Simon Communities in Ireland has found. There was just one property available to rent for a single person within rent supplement/HAP limits over the three day study period; this was in Leitrim. These shocking findings show that the housing and homeless crisis needs action before the current Government leaves office. It cannot wait.

Simon Communities in Ireland respond to new nationwide emergency accommodation figures

5,101 men, women and children will spend Christmas in emergency accommodation

The Simon Communities in Ireland have said that the latest nationwide emergency accommodation figures released by the Department of Environment, Community and Local Government today show that the homeless and housing crisis is continuing to worsen with no real solutions on the horizon to meet growing need. The figures show further increases in adults, families and children who are stuck in emergency accommodation. The figure is now over 5,101 including 3,463 adults, 774 families with 1,638 children. This reflects a 93% increase in family homelessness and a 16% increase homelessness amongst adults since January 2015.

The Simon Communities of Ireland today launched their Annual Report for 2014, reporting a substantial increase of 20% in the number of people seeking help from their services. The housing and homeless charity are supporting almost 7,500 people who are experiencing homelessness across the country.

Simon Communities express concern about the high levels of enforced deprivation in Ireland

The Simon Communities in Ireland have said that Ireland is on target to fail to meet its 2016 aim to reduce the numbers experiencing consistent poverty to 4%. The results of the EU SILC raises question about the quality of life for many people living in Ireland. The EU Survey on Income and Living Conditions (EU-SILC) has found that yet again high numbers of people are experiencing enforced deprivation at 29%, this was 26.9% in 2012 Consistent poverty remains at almost the same level as last year at 8%, this was 5.5% in 2009. Results of this study undertaken by the Central Statistics Office (CSO) were launched today.
