Renters are being failed by the system say Simon Communities

Homeless and housing organisation respond to the RTB Index saying people must be protected with a right to housing.

The Simon Communities in Ireland have said that figures released today from the RTB Rent Index Q3 2018 show that the rental sector is failing those who rely on it. This is pushing people into homelessness and preventing people from leaving homelessness behind; people remain stuck in emergency accommodation with nowhere to go. The homeless and housing organisation said that the introduction of full rent certainty and enhancing security of tenure through indefinite leasing would make a significant impact on the thousands of people struggling to find a home or to remain in the home they have.

60% increase in people turning to Simon Communities services

The housing and homelessness organisation forecast record numbers using their services in 2018

The Simon Communities of Ireland today launched their Annual Report for 2017, highlighting a 60% increase in people turning to all of their emergency, housing and support services around the country over the two-year period, 2015 to 2017; increasing to 13,304, men women and children. Furthermore, figures for the first six months of this year suggest record numbers of people using services in 2018. The Simon Communities report that 1,218 people accessed their emergency accommodation services alone between January and June of 2018; this compares to a total of 968 people accessing emergency accommodation for all of 2017. Up to June 2018, we worked with 3,140 families with 3,255 children compared to 2,006 families with 3,799 children for the whole of 2017.

The Simon Communities in Ireland said that despite the Government’s ‘reclassification’ of people in emergency accommodation, the upwards trend continues. The numbers accessing emergency accommodation in the latest report from the Department of Housing, Planning and Local Government has increased to 9,724 people.

The Simon Communities in Ireland say that figures released today from the Daft.ie 2018 Q3 Rental Report demonstrate how tenants continue to struggle in the face of rising rents and very low supply. The housing and homelessness organisation also said that the report was further proof that Rent Pressure Zones are not having the desired effect.
