Simon Communities respond to February 2018 national emergency accommodation figures

The Simon Communities in Ireland have said that it is shocking to see an additional 1,220 people have become homeless since the start of 2018. 9,807 men, women and children remain stuck in overcrowded emergency accommodation, according to figures released for February 2018 by the Department of Housing, Planning, Community and Local Government, an increase of 32% from February 2017.

Homeless and housing organisation respond to the RTB Index calling for full rent certainty and enhanced security of tenure

The Simon Communities in Ireland have said that figures released today from the RTB Rent Index Q4 2017 shows that, despite a slow-down of growth, rents have still increased to a point where they are now 7% above previous peak levels. The housing and homelessness organisation said the rental market remains under huge pressure and cannot cope with demand. Full rent certainty and enhancing security of tenure would make a significant positive impact on the many thousands of people struggling to find a home and to those who are trying to hold on to the homes they already have.

93% of rental properties beyond Rent Supplement/HAP payments

No properties within RS/HAP limits in four of the eleven study areas – a record low.

The Simon Communities latest Locked Out of the Market X snapshot study has been published today and shows that only 7% of properties available to rent are available within Rent Supplement (RS) /Housing Assistance Payment (HAP) levels. The study was conducted over three consecutive days – 13th, 14th and 15th of February 2018. This is the tenth study in the Locked Out of the Market series.

 

There were just 538 properties available to rent across the eleven locations during this snapshot study. This is a decrease of 54% when compared to May 2015, when the first Locked Out of the Market study was carried out and there were 1,150 properties available. One year ago, 600 properties were available to rent.

Number of people in Emergency Accommodation reaches over 9,000 for the first time

The Simon Communities in Ireland have said that it is deeply concerning to see that the numbers in emergency accommodation reach over 9,000 people for the first time. 9,104 men, women and children remain stuck in overcrowded emergency accommodation, according to figures released for January 2018 by the Department of Housing, Planning, Community and Local Government, an increase of 27% from January 2017. Over 500 people entered emergency accommodation in January. These numbers show a significant increase from the previous month, December 2017.

Social Housing progress welcome but huge concern about the pace of delivery

Simon Communities respond to the Social Housing Delivery & New Home Indicators Report

The Simon Communities in Ireland today welcomed the publication of the ‘Social Housing Delivery & New Home Indicators Report’. However the housing and homelessness organisation expressed concern over the pace of delivery of homes for those who need them and the ongoing the reliance on the private sector. In addition, there are concerns about methods used for measuring social housing completions. The Simon Communities also said that there are approximately 100,000 households on the social housing waiting list.
