Architects Donate Their Time to Support Homelessness Prevention Nationwide
The Royal Institute of the Architects of Ireland (RIAI) Simon Open Door campaign has concluded its 21st year with a remarkable €98,000 raised to support homelessness prevention services provided by the Simon Communities of Ireland.
Since its launch in 2004, the initiative has raised over €1.5 million, empowering RIAI-registered architects to donate their time and expertise to the public in exchange for a donation. In return, homeowners received a one-hour consultation offering expert advice on building, renovating, retrofitting, or future-proofing their homes. All funds raised will go towards critical services such as policy changes, advocacy, emergency accommodation, prevention programmes, and supported housing for people experiencing or at risk of homelessness.
In 2023, campaign funds enabled one of the regional Simon Communities to assist 218 households, providing over 5,200 emergency bed nights and delivering vital prevention, supported housing, and youth services. In 2024, the campaign raised over €98,000, making a significant impact on local Simon Communities across Ireland.
Ber Grogan, Executive Director, Simon Communities of Ireland, said:
“We are incredibly grateful to the RIAI and its members for their continued partnership and support. The €98,000 raised this year will have a real and lasting impact on individuals and families facing homelessness. These funds will directly support vital services – from emergency accommodation to long-term housing solutions – at a time when homelessness in Ireland has reached record levels. Initiatives like RIAI Simon Open Door campaign show the power of collaboration and compassion. Together, we can help ensure every person has a safe, secure place to call home.”
Kathryn Meghen, CEO, RIAI CEO, said:
“We are incredibly proud of the RIAI Simon Open Door campaign, which is a fantastic example of how Registered Architects can use their skills to make a real difference to people’s lives. The RIAI initiated this campaign 21 years ago to raise vital funds for Simon Communities of Ireland, ensuring that vulnerable individuals had a safe place to call home.
The RIAI and Registered Architects have raised close to €1.5 million for the Simon Communities of Ireland over the past 20 years through this campaign. The campaign also connects members of the public who embark on a home improvement project with architectural expertise. Making home improvements is one of the most significant investments people make and the advice of a Registered Architect early on in the project can save time and money.”
