Press Release: Rise in Over 65s Experiencing Homelessness as Simon Communities of Ireland Demand Age-Appropriate Response

25th July 2025

The number of people experiencing homelessness in Ireland has risen for the sixth consecutive month this year, with 15,915 men, women, and children recorded in emergency accommodation in June 2025, according to new figures from the Department of Housing, Local Government and Heritage.

Among the most concerning trends is the sharp rise in homelessness among older people. The Simon Communities of Ireland are today asking: who cares that over 65s are retiring into homelessness?

Since 2020, there has been a 104% increase in people aged over 65 experiencing homelessness – rising from 122 in 2020 to 249 in June 2025.

The June numbers represent an increase of  168 people compared to the previous month. 4,958 of these are children.

Over the 12 months since June 2024, the data reveals a staggering increase of 1,612 people (11.3%) in emergency accommodation:

  • 2,320 were families, marking a 10.9% (227) increase over the year.
  • 4,958 were children, showing a 12.6% (554) rise in the same period.
  • 1,893 were 18-24 year olds, marking a 10.4% (179) increase over the year.
  • 249 were over 65 year olds, marking a 11.7% (26) increase over the year.

These figures do not represent a static number of people in Emergency Accommodation. It is important to note that some people do exit homelessness, but unfortunately the number of people entering homelessness continues to be greater than the number exiting.

Ber Grogan, Executive Director of the Simon Communities of Ireland, said:

“We are seeing more older people now left without an affordable, appropriate, secure place to call home. We’re also seeing a huge increase in children being forced to experience the trauma of homelessness over the last number of years. These are two of the most vulnerable groups in society. The Government must show they care.

Critical Budget 2026 decisions are now being made and we are calling on them to show they care by prioritising urgent, tailored housing solutions – for people already experiencing homelessness, and those at risk. This crisis demands an age-appropriate, compassionate response.”
