Homelessness Must Be Top Priority for Incoming Taoiseach Simon Harris – Simon Communities of Ireland

The Simon Communities of Ireland have said housing and the persistent issue of homelessness must be the priority for the incoming Taoiseach, Simon Harris.

The latest figures released by the Department of Housing, Local Government and Heritage show that the number of men, women and children in homelessness was 13,841 in February.

These figures show an increase of 2,099 people (18%) in emergency accommodation in the 12 months since February 2023.

  • 1,994 were families – a 25% (395) increase in the year.
  • 4,170 were children – a 24% (797) increase in the year.

Wayne Stanley, Executive Director of the Simon Communities of Ireland, said:

“Recent comments from the incoming Taoiseach, Simon Harris, setting out a commitment to greater ambition and funding for housing, is welcome.

The figures released today, with a record 4,170 children in homelessness, reflect the scale of the crisis of homelessness that this Government needs to grapple with.

The answer to this crisis lies in the construction of more social and affordable housing and more supports to those at risk of homelessness. While a commitment to greater ambition and a recognition of the scale of the crisis is welcome, the Government and the Taoiseach will be judged on results. A supportive Government that is committed to shielding individuals and families from homelessness will drive the delivery of more social and affordable homes.

We need to see concrete actions to increase the allocation of social homes to those experiencing homelessness, particularly those in long-term homelessness. The Government should deliver on its promise to pass the Simon Homeless Prevention Bill, and enshrine a right to housing in the constitution.”
